Anyone on four or more short courses of steroids in a year is also at higher risk of weight gain. Steroid tablets (usually prednisolone) stop inflammation in your airways getting worse, reduce your asthma symptoms, and lower your risk of having a life-threatening asthma attack. Although corticosteroids are not the same as anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders they are still a banned drug by the World Anti-Doping Agency for athletes. As they reduce or stop the natural production of cortisol by the body they need to be stopped slowly to allow the body time to start producing cortisol again.

However, they do have some serious and undesirable side effects which can occur if they are taken for a sustained period of time.

Hypertension can occur and may persist even after cessation of use.

In Australia, most boys with DMD are treated with steroids, but there are significant side effects from steroids which need to be discussed with your treating doctor before starting them. Don’t have immunisations with live vaccines while you’re having treatment and for up to 12 months afterwards. The length of time depends on the treatment you are having. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how long you should avoid live vaccinations.

Intravenous (IV) steroids

A low level of potassium in the blood is called hypokalaemia. You might have blood tests during cancer treatment to check for this. You will need further hormone tests, either immediately and/or four to six weeks after the operation.

There are other forms of imaging scans that may occasionally be requested by a rheumatologist to rule out other conditions.

Causes of medical and surgical stress include illness such as fever and vomiting, procedures under general anaesthesia, and fractures. Alternative names for Cushing’s syndrome

One of the side effects of steroids is osteoporosis, which can cause bones to become thinner and then fracture. Your symptoms may almost disappear after four weeks of steroid treatment. However, treatment usually needs to continue for up to two years, or occasionally longer, to stop the symptoms returning. You may be given a contact phone number or helpline number for access to your doctor or nurses, if you have concerns about any changes in your condition such as flares or side effects to drugs.

Children with DMD should be actively monitored for this risk. Steroids for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

It was for my eczema and it did the trick, but my face never snapped back. Although it really helps my skin because I have eczema and it calms it all down but I’ll take a steroid cream any day of the week over the stupid moon txkampsport face. I originally had to take it for my out of control eczema, but I’m doing ivf and I strongly suspect I’ll eventually have to go on it to have any chance of a successful pregnancy because my immune system is a twat.

I had 3 x FEC100 and 3 x T, took ondansetron, dexamethasone and metoclopramide. I know lots of ladies who’ve had chemo for (primary) breast cancer and I’ve never seen a case of moon-face. I found a website called chemo care in the states that told me what all the acrynons were as my regime has differant names to yours, well..it was very interesting, then my brain panicked .. The only real difference between them is the balance of ‘androgenic’ and ‘anabolic’ effects.
